The honest truth about the PTCE

Reading is how you learn it.
Practice is what gets you exam-ready.

The PTCE is 90 questions in 1 hour and 50 minutes, across four areas: medications, federal law, patient safety, and order entry, where the math lives. PTCB reported a 69% pass rate on the 49,253 exams it gave in 2025. Recognizing a drug name isn't enough: you have to recall it fast and set up the math without freezing, and you only get there by practicing.

01"I freeze at the math."

Days' supply, alligation, drip rates. It's been years since school, and a calculator doesn't help if you don't know the setup.

02"There are hundreds of drug names."

Brand, generic, class, use. After the first 50 flashcards they all blur together.

03"I don't know if I'm ready."

You've read the book and still have no idea how you'd score tomorrow, so you keep pushing the date back.

04"I work full time."

A shift at the store, kids, maybe a second job. You need to know exactly what to do with the 30 minutes you have tonight.

Most study guides stop at reading and highlighting.
Here the practice is built in, and every question links to the page that teaches it.

Readiness score

Answers "Am I ready?"

A readiness score that shows where you stand.

Every question you answer updates one number from 0 to 100, with a bar for each of the four PTCE knowledge domains, weighted like the real exam. It counts your latest answers, how much of the outline you've covered and your mock exams, so it doesn't jump to 100 after a lucky streak.

  • Your weakest area shows up first, so you know what to study next
  • Medications, Federal Requirements, Patient Safety and Order Entry tracked separately
  • Mock exams count, so a lucky streak won't inflate it
PTCE-style question
Explanation after answering

Answers "Two answers look right"

300 PTCE-style questions, every one explained.

Original questions written to PTCB's official PTCE content outline, in the same proportions: brand and generic names, schedules and refills, error prevention, Sig codes and calculations. Answer, and you instantly see why the right answer is right and why each wrong answer is wrong. That second part is where the points are.

  • Written to the outline in effect since January 6, 2026
  • Full explanation and "why not the others" on every question
  • Practice by domain, by topic or by ebook page
Timed mock exam
Review grid with flagged questions

Answers "Exam-day nerves"

Take the exam before the exam.

Full mock: 90 questions in 1 hour and 50 minutes, the same length as the real PTCE. Or a half mock on a day off, or a 20-question quick check on your lunch break. No hints during the exam, flag questions and come back, then a full review at the end.

  • Full (90 · 1 h 50 min), half (45 · 55 min) and quick check (20 · 25 min)
  • Questions from all four domains, in the official proportions
  • Close the page and resume later: the timer keeps your time
Math drill results by topic

Answers "I freeze at the math"

Math drills that show every step.

A separate mode just for calculations: conversions, days' supply, dosing by weight, percent and ratio strength, dilutions, alligation and IV flow rates. 120 problems with every step written out, so you learn the setup, not just the answer. Miss one and a similar problem comes back the next day.

  • Every step written out, never just the final number
  • Results by math topic, weakest first
  • Missed problems come back at the right time
Today's study plan

Answers "I work full time"

A plan for today, built around your exam date.

Tell it when your exam is and how much time you have on a normal day. Every morning you get a short list: the flashcards that are due, a math drill, a set of questions on your weakest domain, two pages to read, and a mock when it's time. Each task checks itself off as you do it.

  • 15 minutes or 2 hours a day, the plan adapts
  • No exam date yet? It builds a steady plan until you pick one
  • A streak to keep you coming back

Answers "I forget what I studied"

The book and the questions finally talk to each other.

Miss a question and one tap opens the exact ebook page that teaches it. The 200 flashcards, 150 of them brand/generic pairs, come back right before you'd forget them (spaced repetition), and the whole ebook is inside the Coach, page by page, so you can study from your phone on a break.

  • Brand to generic and generic to brand, both directions

Questions people ask before buying

What exactly is the PTCE Coach App?

A study app for phone, tablet or laptop: install it on your home screen or open it in the browser. It has 300 PTCE-style questions with explanations, 120 step-by-step math drills, timed mock exams, a readiness score, a daily study plan, spaced-repetition flashcards and the full ebook.

How do I access it after I buy?

Right after checkout you receive an email with your personal access code. Open the link, enter the code and you're in. No password, no account to create. Your code also works on a new device.

How long do I have access? Is it a subscription?

It's a single payment, never a subscription, and your access never expires: the Coach and the ebook are yours for life, on any device. When we add or update questions, you get them too.

I'm bad at math. Can I really do the calculations?

The PTCE math is arithmetic: fractions, decimals, ratios, proportions and conversions, not advanced algebra. What trips people up is the setup. Every calculation in the ebook is solved step by step, and the math drills repeat each type of problem until the setup feels automatic.

Are these the real PTCE questions?

No, and nobody can honestly sell you those: the official questions are secure. Our questions are original, written to PTCB's official PTCE content outline (in effect since January 6, 2026), in the same proportions. PTCB also sells its own practice tools built from retired PTCE questions, the PTCE Practice Bank ($65) and the Pre-PTCE ($29). They're a smart final check once you've studied.

Am I eligible to take the PTCE?

PTCB has two pathways: complete a PTCB-Recognized Education/Training Program (or finish one within 60 days of applying; a pharmacy degree can also qualify after PTCB reviews it), or have at least 500 hours of work experience as a pharmacy technician, completed when you apply. You must also live in the US or its territories and disclose any criminal or State Board of Pharmacy actions. Applying and taking the exam costs $129. Check the current rules on ptcb.org before you apply.

PTCE or ExCPT: which exam is this for?

Both are national pharmacy technician certification exams. The PTCE (from PTCB) has 90 questions and is taken in person at a Pearson VUE test center. The ExCPT (from NHA) has 100 questions and can be taken at a PSI test center or with live remote proctoring. This bundle and the Coach are written for the PTCE content outline. Much of the knowledge overlaps (drugs, law, safety, math), but the question mix is different, so if you're taking the ExCPT, use NHA's own outline as your guide.

Does my state require certification?

It depends on your state. Some states require registration, a license or national certification for pharmacy technicians, others don't, and many employers ask for certification anyway. Rules change, so check your state Board of Pharmacy before you plan your path.

What does the readiness score mean?

It's a study gauge from 0 to 100, based on your recent answers, how much of the outline you've covered and your mock exams. PTCB reports a scaled score (you pass at 1,400 on a scale from 1,000 to 1,600), not a percentage, so no practice tool can convert your result exactly. It doesn't predict your PTCE result: use it to see which area needs work today, and watch your mock exam scores over time.

Does it give medical advice or doses for patients?

No. It teaches what a pharmacy technician needs to know for the exam: names, classes, storage, law, safety and the math. Questions about a patient's therapy always go to the pharmacist. Always follow your pharmacy's procedures.

I already bought the eBook. Can I add the Coach?

Yes. Email us with your order number and we'll send you a link to upgrade by paying only the difference.

Which apps does the ebook work with? Can I print it?

Any PDF app: GoodNotes, Notability, Apple Books, Adobe, Xodo. The PDF is 8.5 × 11, full color, and prints cleanly at home.

What if it isn't for me?

Email us within 30 days and we refund you. No questions, no forms.
