The honest truth about the NCC exams

Reading is how you learn it.
Practice is what gets you exam-ready.

The C-EFM is 125 questions in 2 hours, and 70% of it is pattern recognition: the strip, the cause, the next step. The RNC-OB is 175 questions in 3 hours, from preeclampsia to the newborn's first hours. You read strips every shift. On exam day you have to name every feature in exact NICHD terms, fast, and pick the one best answer out of three.

01"Late or variable? I'd know it at the bedside."

On paper, without the patient in front of you, the shapes blur. The exam leaves no room for "it looks like".

02"I don't know if I'm ready."

No date booked yet, a review book on the nightstand and no idea how you'd score tomorrow.

03"Two exams, one brain."

The C-EFM is strips. The RNC-OB is everything from magnesium to postpartum hemorrhage. Where do you start?

04"I work three 12s."

You need to know exactly what to do with the 30 minutes you have the morning after a shift.

A book teaches you the patterns. Practice makes them automatic.
That's why the practice is built in, and it's connected to every page of the book.

Readiness score

Answers "Am I ready?"

A readiness score for each exam.

Every question you answer updates a score from 0 to 100 for the C-EFM and another for the RNC-OB, with a bar for each NCC content category, weighted like the real exam. It counts your latest answers, how much of the outline you've covered and your mock exams, so it doesn't jump to 100 after a lucky streak.

  • Aim for 80+ before test day
  • Every NCC content category tracked separately
  • No "ready" until you've taken that exam's mock
Strip-based practice question
Explanation after answering

Answers "Late or variable?"

Strip practice, until the patterns read themselves.

400 original questions written to the 2026 NCC outlines, in the same proportions. 100 of them are built around a monitor strip: name the baseline, the variability, the deceleration and the category, then choose the next step. Answer, and you instantly see why the right answer is right and why each wrong answer is wrong. That second part is where the points are.

  • Three answer options per question, like the NCC exams
  • NICHD terminology in every strip explanation
  • Generic drug names only, never doses or infusion rates
  • Practice by exam, by NCC category, by topic or by ebook page
Timed mock exam
Review grid with flagged questions

Answers "Exam-day nerves"

Take both exams before exam day.

A C-EFM mock of 125 questions in 2 hours and an RNC-OB mock of 175 questions in 3 hours: the same length and the same content mix as the real NCC exams. No hints during the exam, flag questions and come back, then a full review at the end.

  • C-EFM mock: 125 questions · 2 hours
  • RNC-OB mock: 175 questions · 3 hours
  • Close the page and resume later: the timer keeps your time
Mock exam results by area

Answers "Where am I weak?"

Stop restudying what you already know.

After every set you see your score by NCC content category and by topic. Smart practice then brings your weakest areas to the front and brings missed questions back a day later, when they're about to slip.

  • Results by category, for each exam
  • Topic breakdown, weakest first
  • Missed questions come back at the right time
Today's study plan

Answers "I work three 12s"

A plan for today, built around your exam dates.

Tell it which exam you're taking first, when, and how much time you have on a normal day. No date yet? Pick a target month. Every morning you get a short list: the flashcards that are due, a set of strip questions or RNC-OB questions on your weakest area, two pages to read, and a mock when it's time. Each task checks itself off as you do it.

  • 15 minutes or 2 hours a day, the plan adapts
  • One exam or both, in the order you choose
  • A streak to keep you coming back

Answers "I forget what I studied"

The book and the questions finally talk to each other.

Miss a question and one tap opens the exact ebook page that teaches it. The 160 flashcards come back right before you'd forget them (spaced repetition), and the whole ebook is inside the Coach, page by page, so you can study from your phone on a break.

Answer one real Coach question.

This is exactly how practice works inside the platform: three answer options, like the NCC exams.

C-EFM · Pattern RecognitionLate decelerations

A patient at 39 weeks is on oxytocin for induction. An epidural was placed 40 minutes ago. Over the last 20 minutes:
BP 86/48 mmHg, contractions every 2–3 minutes
FHR baseline 150 bpm, minimal variability, no accelerations
With every contraction, a gradual deceleration that starts after the contraction begins, reaches its lowest point after the contraction peaks and recovers after the contraction ends.
Which is the best response?

FAQ

Questions nurses ask before buying

What exactly is the L&D Coach App?

A study app for phone, tablet or laptop: install it on your home screen or open it in the browser. It has 400 questions with explanations (100 built around a monitor strip), a timed mock for the C-EFM and one for the RNC-OB, a readiness score for each exam, a daily study plan, spaced-repetition flashcards and the full ebook.

Does it cover both exams? Can I take just one?

It covers both. The C-EFM and the RNC-OB are separate NCC exams with separate applications and fees, so you can take one, the other or both, in any order. In the Coach you set a date for each exam, or for just one, and the plan follows. The ebook is split the same way: chapters 1–6 for the C-EFM, 7–11 for the RNC-OB, cram sheets for both.

Am I eligible to sit the exams?

C-EFM: a current, unencumbered license in the US or Canada as a physician, registered nurse, nurse practitioner, nurse midwife or midwife, physician assistant or paramedic. NCC requires no practice experience, but recommends experience with electronic fetal monitoring. RNC-OB: a current RN license in the US or Canada, 24 months of specialty experience with at least 2,000 hours, and employment in the specialty at some point in the last 24 months. NCC's current rules are the ones that count: check them before you apply.

How long are the real exams?

The C-EFM has 125 questions (100 scored, 25 unscored pretest items) and 2 hours. The RNC-OB has 175 questions (150 scored, 25 pretest) and 3 hours. Every question has three answer options, and only one is correct. Our practice questions use the same three-option format. Our mocks match that length, and the mix of topics follows NCC's published content outlines.

How do I access it after I buy?

Right after checkout you receive an email with your personal access code. Open the link, enter the code and you're in. No password, no account to create. Your code also works on a new device.

How do I get access?

Right after checkout you get an email with your download link and, with the app, your personal access code. It works on any device. When we add or update questions, you get them too.

Are these the real NCC questions?

No, and nobody can honestly sell you those: NCC doesn't release its exam questions. Ours are original questions written to the 2026 NCC content outlines for the C-EFM and the RNC-OB, in the same proportions, using the NICHD terminology both NCC candidate guides refer to.

What does the readiness score mean?

It's our estimate of how prepared you are, from 0 to 100 for each exam, based on your recent answers, how much of the outline you've covered and your mock exams. NCC exams are criterion-referenced: there is no set percentage to pass, and the official report gives word descriptors (very weak to very strong) by content area, not scores. So no practice tool can predict your result exactly. We suggest aiming for 80+ before you book: that's our own benchmark, not an NCC passing score.

Does it include drug doses?

No. Questions and pages use generic drug names and teach what a drug does and when to anticipate it, never doses, infusion rates or titration ranges. Always follow your unit's protocols and orders.

I already bought the eBook. Can I add the Coach?

Yes. Email us with your order number and we'll send you a link to upgrade by paying only the difference.

Which apps does the ebook work with? Can I print it?

Any PDF app: GoodNotes, Notability, Apple Books, Adobe, Xodo. The PDF is full color and prints cleanly at home.

What if it isn't for me?

Email us within 30 days and we refund you. No questions, no forms.
