The honest truth about the CEN

Reading is how you learn it.
Practice is what gets you exam-ready.

The CEN is 175 questions in 3 hours: 150 that count and 25 unscored pretest questions you can't tell apart. In one sitting it jumps from a STEMI to a sexual assault exam to a croupy toddler, across 11 categories, and asks for the priority, the first action, the best room after triage. You only get fast at that by practicing. BCEN reports 4,198 passes out of 8,889 CEN exams delivered in 2025.

01"I don't know if I'm ready."

You've worked the ED for years and still have no idea how you'd score tomorrow.

02"Two answers both look right."

"Priority", "first", "best location after triage". The exam tests judgment, and that's a skill.

03"I rarely see that patient."

GU, GYN & OB, eyes and ENT, mental health: 33 of the 150 scored questions, and not your usual shift.

04"I work three 12s."

You need to know exactly what to do with the 30 minutes you have the morning after a shift.

Most review books stop at reading and highlighting.
Here the practice is built in, and every question links to the page that teaches it.

Readiness score

Answers "Am I ready?"

A readiness score that shows how close you are.

Every question you answer updates one number from 0 to 100, with a bar for each of the 11 categories of the BCEN content outline, weighted like the real exam. It counts your latest answers, how much of the outline you've covered and your mock exams, so it doesn't jump to 100 after a lucky streak.

  • Aim for 80+ before test day
  • All 11 categories tracked, from Cardiovascular to Professional Issues
  • No "ready" until you've taken a mock exam
CEN-style ED question
Explanation after answering

Answers "Two answers look right"

300 CEN-style questions, every one explained.

ED scenarios written to the official BCEN content outline, in the same proportions: the triage note, the vitals, the monitor, then the priority action, the most likely cause or the best place to put the patient. Answer, and you instantly see why the right answer is right and why each wrong answer is wrong. That second part is where the points are.

  • Generic drug names only, never doses or drip rates
  • Full explanation and "why not the others" on every question
  • Practice by category, by topic or by ebook page
Timed mock exam
Review grid with flagged questions

Answers "Exam-day nerves"

Take the exam before the exam.

Full mock: 175 questions in 3 hours, the same length and pace as the real CEN. Or a half mock on a day off between shifts, or a 35-question quick check. No hints during the exam, flag questions and come back, then a full review at the end.

  • Full (175 · 3 h), half (88 · 90 min) and quick check (35 · 36 min)
  • Questions from all 11 categories, in the official proportions
  • Close the page and resume later: the timer keeps your time
Mock exam results by category

Answers "Where am I weak?"

Stop restudying what you already know.

After every set you see your score by exam category and by topic. Smart practice then brings your weakest categories to the front and brings missed questions back a day later, when they're about to slip.

  • Results for all 11 CEN categories
  • Topic breakdown, weakest first
  • Missed questions come back at the right time
Today's study plan

Answers "I work three 12s"

A plan for today, built around your exam date.

Tell it when your exam is, or that you haven't booked it yet, and how much time you have on a normal day. Every morning you get a short list: the flashcards that are due, a set of questions on your weakest category, two pages to read, and a mock when it's time. Each task checks itself off as you do it.

  • 15 minutes or 2 hours a day, the plan adapts
  • More mocks in the last two weeks
  • A streak to keep you coming back

Answers "I forget what I studied"

The book and the questions finally talk to each other.

Miss a question and one tap opens the exact ebook page that teaches it. The 150 flashcards come back right before you'd forget them (spaced repetition), and the whole ebook is inside the Coach, page by page, so you can study from your phone on a break.

How do I get access?

Right after checkout you get an email with your download link and, with the app, your personal access code. It works on any device. When we add or update questions, you get them too.

Is it updated for the new 2026 CEN outline?

Yes. The book and the Coach follow the CEN Examination Content Outline that BCEN made effective in July 2026: 11 categories, 150 scored questions, from Cardiovascular (18 questions) to Professional Issues (12), which includes triage and mass casualty.

Are these the real CEN questions?

No, and nobody can honestly sell you those: the official questions are secure and owned by BCEN. Our questions are original ED scenarios written to the BCEN content outline, in the same proportions, and in the same style as BCEN's published sample questions: the priority, the most likely cause, the best location after triage.

What score do I need, and what does the readiness score mean?

BCEN currently states that you need 99 of the 150 scored questions right to pass; the 25 pretest questions don't count, and you can't tell which they are. BCEN sets the passing score with the Angoff method and statistical equating, so it can vary slightly between exam forms. Our readiness score is our own estimate of how prepared you are, from 0 to 100, based on your recent answers, how much of the outline you've covered and your mock exams. No practice tool can predict your result: 99 of 150 is 66%, so aim for a readiness of 80+ and mock scores comfortably above that line.

Does it include drug doses?

No. Questions and pages use generic drug names and teach what a drug does and when to anticipate it, never doses, infusion rates or titration ranges. Always follow your department's protocols and orders.

Am I eligible to sit the CEN?

BCEN requires a current, unencumbered RN license in the United States, a US territory, Canada or Australia (licenses from other countries go through a credential evaluation). BCEN recommends two years of ED experience but does not require it. After you apply you have a 90-day window to schedule and sit the exam, so check the current rules on bcen.org before you book.

How much does the exam cost? What if I fail?

According to BCEN, the exam fee is $285 for members of a professional association and $380 for non-members. If you don't pass, you can retest after a 90-day wait, and BCEN offers a discounted retest fee within one year of your first attempt. Your score report shows how you did in each content category, and the Coach can start from there.

I already bought the eBook. Can I add the Coach?

Yes. Email us with your order number and we'll send you a link to upgrade by paying only the difference.

Will it help with the CPEN or TCRN?

The bundle and the Coach are written for the CEN. The CEN covers patients of all ages, so pediatric and trauma topics are inside, but the CPEN (pediatric emergency) and TCRN (trauma) have their own outlines with a different depth, so treat it as a head start, not a full prep.

Which apps does the ebook work with? Can I print it?

Any PDF app: GoodNotes, Notability, Apple Books, Adobe, Xodo. The PDF is 8.5 × 11, full color, and prints cleanly at home.

What if it isn't for me?

Email us within 30 days and we refund you. No questions, no forms.
